SUPER MOD
A heads up no break out style doorslammer class that attracts a diverse group of cars had been badly missed in the UK over the past couple of seasons.
With the Pro Modified ranks struggling to finance the almost fluid changes required to meet their rulebook UK Racers wanted a new class that had all the glamour and excitement of Pro Mod but that didn't require a lottery win to be competitive!!
With that in mind a series of meetings with interested drivers identified a `Wish List`.

The wish list represented a tough challenge if the new Class was going to be affordable and able to attract racers and their cars back to the track.
Seeking to satisfy the above a rulebook was written and discussed, that was flexible enough to accommodate cars and engines of various configurations although restrictive in its allowance of the use of `luxury` performance items. Without re-writing the rule book, an agreement was reached that incorporated a number of fundamental rules:
Weight per Cubic Inch Restrictions (The bigger the motor the heavier the car has to be)
Weight loadings for use of limited Nitrous Oxide, Pro-Stock Style cylinder heads, clutches and manual transmissions.
In an attempt to keep a tight hold on the costs a number of other clauses have been built in to provide consistency of approach, including the following which have been disallowed or restricted:
no dry sumps systems,
no turbo or supercharging,
restricted bore size and spacing,
no electronic fuel injection,
limited valve sizes and springs,
bore to stroke ratio limitations etc.
With a Rulebook, tons of enthusiasm and just a little apprehension it was time put the theory into practice.
And so to the test!!
With interest from promoters at both UK major drag racing facilities, the Super Modified Class debuted at Santa Pod's Bug Jam in July 2001 with 11 cars making the show.
Round after Round saw a tremendous reception from the thousands packed into the stands and on the bank enjoying the spectacle of rolling burnouts, side-by-side wheels up launches and superb, close racing.
Fierce competition right through to the finals saw Danny Cockerill clinch the inaugural win with an 8.05 @ 172mph in his 540 cubic inch GM powered Rover 200 Coupe.
With the first demo session under the belt and being deemed a great success all efforts were then focused on bringing back the Super Mod show for what was the up and coming Super Series events to be held at Shakespeare County Raceway.
The Class put in demonstration runs at both Super Series 4 & 5 with Danny Cockerill not only qualifying number 1 and taking the win at both events in breathtaking style but making history with the first ever 7-second runs.
The class has certainly proven in a very short time that it has all the right ingredients to steal the show at every track every time and 2002 should see things really hotting up.
