Remember that the original poster said all he did was swap from the Edelbrock to the Holley and this started. Timing is a possible culprit as well as carbon deposits but no other changes were listed by the original poster.
Holes in the throttle blades: This is a common practice. My Pro Systems carb has it to keep from opening the throttle blades too much and coming off of the idle circuit with a lumpy cam. This modification has its place but this isn't for everyone or and isn't a fix for every carb problem. As stated in my first post, opening the secondaries farther (while staying on the idle circuit, think "square idle transfer slots") will accomplish the same thing to a point. Past this point, holes may be required, but this modification is usually done to improve idle quality such as if the idle is turned up so high that the carb is off the idle circuit and idle mixture screws have no effect. I wouldn't start drilling on your carb yet though. Try everything else first.
Cheers,
Alex
